St. Paul jazz fans will forever mourn the relocation of the Dakota, while Minneapolitans, no doubt, will forever smirk over their gain. This sizzling venue is not so much new, as new-and-improved. Having left its dubious spot in Bandana Square, the Dakota reinvented itself with a longer name (it was formerly known as Dakota Bar and Grill) and a location that's more accessible. The stretch of Nicollet Mall between Eighth and 12th Streets is competing with Uptown and the Warehouse District as a magnet for evening pursuits, and the Dakota will only increase the draw. Top local and national performers like Elvin Jones, Debbie Duncan and Moore by Four will continue to thrill jazz and blues lovers, while diners will enjoy a tremendous wine list and an enhanced American menu that was already stellar. Everything from bar snacks to full, multi-course dinners is available while you catch the cool sounds from Dakota's stage. And best of, there's no added cover when you're seated in the dining room. There isn't a dance floor at this club, but foot tapping and torso gyrations are encouraged. Much of what you're looking for in a complete dating venue is going on here every night.

Great place

We went last night to see Wallace Roney. He was a bit out there, but we had a great time. Nice atmosphere, great service, excellent food and drinks. A great place to hang out if you're over 30 and don't want to be bothered by the meat-market crap....

Rare find - amazing food/music
By dakotajazz on 02/17/2006
I travel a lot, and I've never found anything like this. The room is really beautiful - not glitzy, but it does dazzle. It's stylish and warm. There are two sides to it - the restaurant has a new chef, and I'd have to say the food is as good as I've had anywhere. Creative combinations, and really wonderful flavors and beautiful presentation. (The walleye was phenominal.) From next door in the Jazz Club, we could hear this great band 's music drifting into the dining room. I loved the whole feel! Great wine list. My only comment is that I like ports, and would've liked a bigger selection. But the overall experience and combined quality - atmosphere, food, and music - was unlike anything I've seen anywhere else. (We also had a wonderful server - Amber - who knew her stuff and made us feel like regulars.)

Greatly over-rated. Chefs seem to feel food is inherantly good if the combination of ingredients is either strange or exotic. Food is average at best.

Nice atmosphere, good entertainment, but a bit overpriced.
